DEPOT (named after a small, quiet
country town in New York State), is a bluegrass band consisting of 5 members
singing and playing traditional instruments. The DEPOT has been pickin'
and singing together for 10 years. Three of the original members are still
with the band -- Co-founder Leon, Ed, and Carl, with newest members Roy
and Kevin coming in from the now disbanded Code Blue (which also featured
Leon on bass).
Roy Streever (guitar)
Roy grew
up in western Sullivan County listening to the folk music of the sixties.
He began playing guitar at age twelve and got bitten by the bluegrass
bug around 1971. From the mid 70's until the late 80's Roy played mandolin
in the bluegrass bands "Southwind" and "Probable Cause",
the latter band name relating to his law enforcement career. Roy previously
played guitar in the bluegrass band Code Blue.
Kevin Monahan (mandolin)
Kevin spent 20 years playing guitar
with various bands in the Hudson Valley. It wasn't until 1990 that the
long time love of bluegrass finally caught up with him. Starting on banjo,
and eventually moving to mandolin, he hasn't looked back. His main influences
are Bill Monroe, Sam Bush, DAWG, and Ricky Scaggs. Kevin played mandolin
in the bluegrass band Code Blue (with Roy and Leon) prior to joining Oxford
Depot.
Ed Ackerly (banjo)
When Ed is not involved in his banjo playing duties
with Oxford Depot he spends his spare time as a full-time, self-employed
masonry contractor, full-time dad, husband, homeowner and maintenance
specialist, along with other related responsibilities. If it weren’t
for the banjo, Ed would not be a banjo player today.
Carl Kubie (fiddle)
Carl Kubie took his first
violin lesson when he was about 12 years old. He studied classical for
about two years and got the basic foundation of the instrument. He played
drums after that and played in various bands into his early 30’s.
Then in the late 80’s, a friend introduced him to fiddle music and
to Steve Jacobi of Equinunk, PA. Steve taught him fiddle tunes in Irish,
Canadian, Old Time and Bluegrass styles. Carl plays with Oxford Depot
and also the Old Time Fiddlers of Wayne Co., PA. He lives in Wantage,
NJ with his wife and two children. He has lived in that area most of his
life and hopes to play the fiddle for the rest of it.
Leon Swyka (bass)
Leon Swyka was born in Middletown,
NY in 1961. He has never lived more than ten miles from where he grew
up, on Pufftown Road in Scotchtown. He enjoyed playing music at an early
age starting with violin, then guitar and mandolin, also banjo, and finally
the bass, all along fiddling with the piano.
